| Broker cheats discovered. |
Brokers do cheat and Joseph Osore of Ndegerwa will tell his story.
Joseph joined Mbakhalo Farmers Action Association and purchased certified
hybrid sunflower seed from the FAA store.
The sunflower crop was then harvested, dried, sorted and bagged.
Hearing of problems with brokers Joseph Osore with Richard Ndemo
(Farmers Own Agronomist) and Carolyne Watula (Assistant Director for
Kabuefwe Farmers Action Association) arranged to sell a quantity to a
broker.
They weighed two bags with Farmers Own government stamped and in date scales.
One bag weighed in at 75kg and the other at 70 kg.
When the broker came he weighed those bags at 65Kg and 60 kg.
The broker paid 12/- kg and Joseph received just 1500 k/-.
Mabakhola FAA members averaged 13/- kg so Joseph would have received 1885/- for
these two bags.
In all Joseph had 374 kg and would have received at 13/- kg 4862 k/-.
The broker would have weighed this crop in at 314 kg, paid 12/- and so the cash
to Joseph would just be 3768 k/-. That means a loss to Joseph of 1094/-. He
cannot afford that level of loss for his small crop surplus.
Farmers cannot afford such huge losses.
The Farmers Own fair trade deal is the better deal. It pays more and is fair.
