The Programme
Farmers Own offers a project which will help translate the intense global focus on poverty in Africa into action and results. Poverty is awesome with probably 85% of families living below or very close to the $1 day indicator of absolute poverty. Worse yet, poverty is increasing in extent and intensity. Environmental quality is low and worsening. Resources held in common are still being pillaged. On many farmlands in use the soils are impoverished,crop yields are low and so is product quality. For crops of any value there is very little to sell.

This programme is about putting more money in farmers pockets and improving their soils and lands so that income increases through improved management.Farmers Own markets peasant farmer production into the business mainstream as follows:

There is no guesswork or mystery involved in this programme. From the moment we begin organising the farmers into groups, we know what produce is in demand and required by the market. We also guarantee the farmers that their produce will be purchased at fair and competitive prices.In return we guarantee the buyers that the produce they require will be of the highest quality and delivered on time as per contract.

Viable Crops
Crops to be grown are selected based on market demands. A report prepared for Farmers Own showed two kinds of market opportunity, one for frozen foods and one for dry food ingredients such as soya and other beans.
We have identified the following steps or crop phases to be undertaken by the farmers: - Step 1 - three oilseed or pulse crops .e.g. soya beans, sunflower - Step 2 - three field crops (capsicums, pineapple, passion fruit) and three tree crops (avocadoes, macademia and mangoes). The market exists for this produce whether in dry form or processed. All the farmers need is a helping hand to get them started on the right track. Farmers Own exists for that sole purpose.

Market Demand
We found potential markets both locally and abroad for all of our listed products.
There is demand in Kenya for:
- soya;
- sunflower;
- pineapples;
- passion fruit;

In the United Kingdom we have found opportunities to supply organic and /or fair trade products as follows:
- pineapple juice concentrate;
- passion concentrate;
- canned pineapples;
- passion pulp;

Opportunities exist in Japan for supply of organic products with soya and soya specialities being top on the list.

And this is just the beginning.
