| For Western Province citizens survive on 52/- day (70 US cents) and die early |
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development report for 2006 reports poverty on the rise. In Western province 59% of the people are in absolute poverty with per capita incomes reported as circa 52/- day (US$0.70) and death comes early at fifty, ten years before counterparts in Central Province. 85,000 people are with HIV-Aids but malaria is the biggest cause of death, while tuberculosis handicaps many. Most live in abject poverty, without access to proper health care, including doctors, water, and adequate nutrition. In more general terms the UNDP report cites factors relating to poverty as remoteness, poor road networks, soil erosion, lack of appropriate agricultural production technology, inadequate crop storage, poor organisation of communities, fluctuating prices for crops, and insecurity, with violent crime becoming more prevalent.
Imagine yourself as part of this. Surely it is time to turn from talk to action?
