As phase 1 production and marketing of oilseeds and pulses gets under way actions must be taken to prepare the way for phase 2. The key need is to conduct the necessary product development. Steve Caiger is emphatic that production targets are large and that the proposed rates of development are ambitious. This is the downside but the upside is the market opportunity. There is substantial market for MD” pineapples, the main type today for fresh markets but this type has to be introduced to Kenya. Markets for juices and concentrates of the two fruits are substantial for the proposed certified fair trade and/or organic products and there is substantial market interest. As these opportunities can bring 40,000 or more people from poverty into a sustainable livelihood system and bring industrial production to an economic desert it is appropriate to remain ambitious, to call for more help, more money and generally to forge the active partnerships that will bring on stream quickly the several product development projects that Caiger advocates
