The Indictment of Awesome Poverty
Kenya is one of the sub-saharan African nations with awesome poverty. 55% of the population is the official figure for absolute poverty, earning less than $1 day, but the reality may be closer to 80%. What an indictment is that! Indicted are successive governments of Kenya but perhaps equally responsible are governments and peoples of our world.
The poor need the shackles of poverty removed by market led business development that gives them a decent livelihood and the ability to stay at peace where their roots and cultures are. You can help them through us. Do it now.
Our mission and what we do
Our mission is to provide fair trade market services to eradicate poverty. We achieve by identifying market opportunity and bring large groups (Farmers Action Associations of about 500 actives) into the supply line by providing supply contracts for agricultural crops.
Why is the fair trade business based on agriculture?
Most of the poor are rural based people who access land and depend upon their husbandry skills for survival. Volume opportunities exist for many food and industrial products.
Our 5 year objectives
To bring 40,000 people of Kenya’s Western Province from the misery of absolute poverty by volume production and fair trade marketing of oilseeds, pulses, field fruits, spices and tree crops. Incomes will rise above $1 day and Farmers Action Associations will be consolidated, well managed and transferring to private business status with a second five year fair trade contract with Farmers Own.
The ten year vision
Eight private companies (each with ten Farmers Action Associations as branches) will be producing and trading with Farmers Own. Farmers Own will be a recognised ethnic fair trade brand successfully marketing raw materials and processed products domestically, to the region and to Europe. Incomes of the rural participants will have increased to $5 day or more. Alliances and partnerships with established businesses will enable processing and Farmers Own will be processing some products in its own facilities. Turnover will be in excess of $40,000,000. Farmers Own have some annual surplus to invest in new pro-poor market led business development.
The Farmers Own entity.
Our history goes back to 1992. In those years many development challenges have been overcome and successes achieved. Development lessons have been learned and applied. Today Farmers Own is still innovating at the leading edge, and it does deliver. You can help it grow.
